With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles in Hong Kong in recent years, the demand for fast and convenient charging facilities has also increased. In this context, DC fast charging (direct current fast charging) technology is gradually becoming one of the important infrastructures to meet the needs of electric vehicle owners. As an important part of urban space resources, underground parking lots have gradually become a popular place for the application of DC fast charging technology.
DC fast charging has significant time advantages compared to traditional AC slow charging (AC slow charging). Traditional charging takes hours, but DC fast charging can often charge a vehicle with most of the power it needs in just 30 minutes. This is very attractive for time-constrained city life. Especially in a city like Hong Kong where every inch of land is valuable, fast charging saves car owners’ precious time
In addition, the relatively closed environment of the underground parking lot provides safety for the installation of charging piles, while effectively utilizing space to solve the problem of limited ground charging pile sites.
In recent years, the Hong Kong government and electric vehicle companies have been accelerating the construction of related facilities. Many commercial and residential buildings’ basement parking lots are already equipped with DC fast charging piles, such as several shopping malls and high-end residential communities. This not only provides convenience for electric car owners, but also creates an additional source of income for parking lot managers.
However, the current challenges cannot be ignored. On the one hand, installing DC fast charging piles requires high initial investment and power infrastructure support, especially in basements where power supply capacity may be limited. On the other hand, some parking lot operators and property management companies lack awareness and enthusiasm for the need to install charging piles, resulting in limited coverage.
